Bobcat is a manufacturer, not a machine type — but like JCB, the brand became the word. On UAE sites, “send a Bobcat” means a skid steer loader: a compact, four-wheeled machine that steers by driving its wheels at different speeds, which is what lets it spin within its own length.
That turning ability is the whole point. A skid steer works in spaces where a wheel loader can’t turn and a backhoe loader can’t fit — inside partially built structures, in yards, between buildings, on villa plots.
The second point is attachments. The machine is really a power unit: the bucket that arrives with it is just one of ten-plus tools it can carry.
These two get confused constantly, and they do genuinely different things.
A Bobcat (skid steer) works at and above ground level. It scoops, carries, pushes, sweeps and runs attachments. It moves fast around a site and is the better machine for clearing, levelling, moving material and anything needing a powered attachment.
A mini excavator digs down. It works from a fixed position, digs to 2–3 metres, and reaches into trenches and footings a skid steer physically cannot.
Digging a trench, pool or footing → mini excavator. Clearing, levelling, carrying, breaking or sweeping → Bobcat. Plenty of jobs use both, and on tight villa sites that pairing is very common.
