Lift Sizing

What Size Crane Do You Need?

Three numbers decide your crane: the total weight of the load, the working radius (how far the crane sits from where the load lands), and the lift height. You check those against the crane’s load chart and stay under 75–85% of its rated capacity.

The one most people get wrong is radius. Crane capacity is quoted at minimum radius — a “50-tonne crane” lifts 50 tonnes only with the load practically against the carrier. Move it out and capacity falls off a cliff:

Working radiusApproximate lifting capacity of a 50 t crane
3 m50 t
8 m~18 t
12 m~12 t
16 m~8 t
24 m~4.5 t
Indicative figures — every model’s load chart is different. Always confirm against the actual chart for the machine and configuration.

A rough rule of thumb: double the radius and you lose half your capacity or more. Which is why a 4-tonne AC unit landing 20 metres away is not a 25-tonne crane job — it’s an 80–100 tonne one. Our full crane sizing guide works through that example step by step.

You don’t have to do this yourself. Send us the load weight, where it starts, where it lands, and how close we can park — we’ll size it and tell you the class you need.

Free lift assessment. Send the load weight, radius and height — plus a site photo if you have one — and we’ll size the crane for you, usually the same day.

Fleet & Rates

Crane Rental Rates in the UAE by Tonnage

Crane rental in the UAE runs roughly AED 1,200–1,800 per day for a 25-tonne machine, AED 1,800–2,800 for a 50-tonne, AED 3,500–6,000 for 80–100 tonnes, and AED 7,000–15,000 for 130–220 tonnes — wet hire, with a certified operator included. Mobilisation, permits and long-term discounts change the final number.

What’s included — and what isn’t

Included as standard: a certified operator, current third-party inspection (TPI) certification, routine maintenance, and breakdown support. Crane rental in the UAE is wet hire by default — the operator comes with the machine.

Charged separately: mobilisation and demobilisation, road permits and escorts for large classes, riggers and banksmen if you need them supplied, and standby time outside the agreed window.

If your job sits between two classes, the honest advice is usually to take the larger one. The rate difference is small next to the cost of a crane that arrives and can’t make the lift.

Compliance

Certification, Operators and Lift Plans

Cranes are the most heavily regulated machines we rent, and for good reason. Every crane working in the UAE needs a valid third-party inspection (TPI) certificate, and the operator needs certification for that machine class. Municipalities and free zones apply their own requirements on top — Trakhees in Dubai’s port and free-zone areas being the one people meet most often.

What comes with every AQL crane:

  • Current TPI certification matching the machine’s serial number
  • A certified operator licensed for that crane class
  • A lift plan on request, prepared before the machine leaves the yard
  • Riggers and banksmen available if your team doesn’t have them

Because we supply the operator, the sizing risk sits with us — we’re the ones confirming the chart works before dispatch. That’s the practical argument for wet hire on lifting work, and it’s covered in our wet hire vs dry hire comparison.

Larger classes need road permits and sometimes a police escort, and mobilisation has to work around Dubai’s truck rules — see our Dubai truck permit rules guide. Build mobilisation time into your programme for anything above 100 tonnes.

Site Setup

Ground, Outriggers and Site Access

A mobile crane pushes enormous point loads through four outrigger pads. Sandy or reclaimed ground, backfilled trenches and shallow services can all give way underneath them — which is why ground is the single most common reason a crane arrives and can’t set up.

Before the crane arrives, confirm:

  • A firm, level, compacted pad — roughly 10 × 10 m clear for a 50-tonne class machine, more above that
  • Room for the full outrigger spread — 7.0 to 8.5 m across on our fleet, plus space for the carrier
  • Outrigger mats to spread the load, on anything that isn’t solid slab
  • Clearance from excavation edges, backfilled trenches and buried services
  • Overhead clearance — power lines, scaffolding, and neighbouring tower-crane arcs across the full swing path
  • Delivery access for the crane itself, and for counterweight trucks on larger classes

Wind is the other variable: most lifts stop above roughly 9–10 m/s at the boom tip, and less for large flat loads that act like sails. If your programme has no float, tell us — it affects both the crane choice and the schedule.

Our full site preparation checklist covers the rest of what to have ready before delivery day.

Coverage

Where We Deliver — and How Fast

Our crane rental service covers all seven emirates — Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain. Standard classes typically mobilise within 2 to 4 hours of a confirmed booking; larger cranes needing permits, escorts or counterweight transport take longer, and we confirm exact timing with the quote.

We also plan around the summer midday break — outdoor work stops between 12:30 and 3:00 pm from 15 June to 15 September — and, for critical lifts, we’ll often schedule early morning when wind is lowest.

Need lifting capability without a crane? For lower-height material handling a telehandler is frequently the cheaper and faster answer — tell us the job and we’ll say which one you actually need.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does crane rental cost in the UAE?

Crane rental in the UAE runs roughly AED 1,200–1,800 per day for a 25-tonne machine, AED 1,800–2,800 for a 50-tonne, AED 3,500–6,000 for 80–100 tonnes, and AED 7,000–15,000 for 130–220 tonnes — wet hire, with a certified operator included. Mobilisation and permits are charged separately.

What size crane do I need for my lift?

It depends on three numbers: the total load weight including rigging, the working radius, and the lift height — checked against the crane’s load chart at no more than 75–85% of rated capacity. Radius matters most: a 4-tonne load at 20 metres typically needs an 80–100 tonne class machine, not a 25-tonne one. Send us the numbers and we’ll size it free.

What size crane do I need to lift 5 tons?

Almost entirely a question of radius. At a short radius under 8 metres, a 25–30 tonne crane may handle 5 tonnes comfortably. At 20 metres or more you are likely looking at an 80–100 tonne class machine. Work out your radius first, then check it against the load chart.

Does crane rental include an operator?

Yes. Crane rental in the UAE is wet hire by default — a certified operator is included as standard, and riggers and banksmen are available on request. It also puts the responsibility for sizing and executing the lift on us.

What is the 75% rule in crane lifting?

Standard practice is to plan lifts at no more than 75–85% of the crane’s chart capacity for that boom length and radius. The margin absorbs wind, dynamic loading as the load comes off its supports, and any error in the estimated weight.

How much space does a mobile crane need on site?

A 50-tonne class crane typically needs a 7.0–8.5 m outrigger spread plus room for the carrier — roughly a clear, level 10 × 10 m area. Larger classes need more, plus access for the crane and counterweight trucks to drive in.

Do I need a permit to bring a crane to my site in Dubai?

Large cranes need road and transport permits, sometimes a police escort, and must work around Dubai’s truck restrictions. Sites may also need lifting-related approvals depending on location and any lane closures. We handle the machine-side permits and tell you what sits with your site.

How quickly can you get a crane to my site?

Standard classes typically mobilise within 2 to 4 hours of a confirmed booking, seven days a week, anywhere in the UAE. Large cranes needing permits, escorts or counterweight transport take longer — we confirm exact timing with the quote.
