Wet Hire vs Dry Hire: The Full Cost Breakdown

The most disputed question in UAE equipment rental, settled with actual numbers — what each option includes, what dry hire really costs, and who carries the risk.
What Wet Hire and Dry Hire Actually Mean
Wet hire — with operator
The supplier's machine, certified operator, fuel and maintenance in one daily rate. You direct the work; breakdowns are the supplier's problem. For cranes it is not optional — lifts need certified operators and lift plans.
Dry hire — machine only
Cheaper per day, but you supply a correctly licensed operator, fuel and daily checks — and you carry operational damage liability. A light-vehicle licence does not cover a 20T excavator.
A Worked Example: Telehandler, Two Weeks

On a two-week job the totals nearly converge, and wet hire removes the downtime risk entirely. Stretch the same maths over three months with operators already on your payroll and dry hire pulls clearly ahead — machine ≈ AED 63,000 against a wet-hire ≈ AED 90,000, provided your operators and supervision genuinely cost you nothing extra.
The honest rule of thumb: under a month, take wet hire. Over three months with licensed operators on payroll, run the dry numbers. In between, ask for both quotes — see our 2026 price guide for the base rates.
Who Carries the Risk
On wet hire, the supplier is responsible for the machine and its operation. On dry hire, you are responsible for operation and operational damage, while wear-and-tear stays with the supplier. Insist on this split being written into the quote — disputes almost always trace back to a rate agreed on the phone with nothing on paper.
Licensing matters more than most contractors expect: if an unlicensed operator has an accident on your dry hire, your insurance likely will not pay out. Check the UAE licence category against the machine class before the machine arrives, not after.
